CDTi loud metallic noise when idling:
I'm not having much luck with the silver surfer currently! It has suddenly today developed a loud metallic rattling noise on idle.
The noise goes away as revs increase, and there is no loss of power or any other change that I can detect. Any ideas chaps? Is this consistent with one or more engine mounts failing? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Could be your crank pulley - does the noise seem to come from near the offside end of the engine ?

Hmm, not a million miles away but more metallic sounding somehow. Also on this video the sound seems to take a few seconds to kick in - mine is straight away from start.
PS should have said I had my pulley and all belts done two months ago, so not that I think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Tom- do you know what make of pulley was fitted ? - anything other than the genuine Corteco item can fail quite quickly.

No it's not a Corteco, unfortunately. It's by a French manufacturer from memory - I will have a look on the invoice. I have done less than 2k miles though since it was changed, can non-genuine ones really fail that quickly? Annoying if so but I shall be straight back to the garage!

Might be worth checking the center exhaust heat-shield for being loose. My tourer developed a loud rattle at idle but was OK when moving - all four mounting points had failed - some penny washers and new bolts and all was quiet again.

Also worth checking the water pump pulley for play, as that can make a similar noise when it is on the way out. |

Lack of funds and needing one quick I had one of these fitted last October and it's still going strong...although to be honest I've only done a few thousand miles since.
Comes with a two year 20k warranty anyway so if (or when) it does fail I'll replace it with a genuine Corteco one. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321209234685 EDIT: If you do need one and go for it they don't come with a new stretch bolt so you will need to get one. I got one from Rimmers.
