1.8 head gasket
if head gasket gone would engine smoke but which goes once warmed up?

you would get a Lot of white smoke

If you are getting white smoke (steam) on start up and a rough idle until the engine warms up a bit could be the inlet manifold gasket.

I see that you're asking on behalf of someone else Barry. What colour is the smoke? Are there any other symptoms?
