Default Diesel engine cutting out

Hi all, posting this one for someone in the village with no pc.

He has a 2001 2l diesel manual saloon, which cuts and intermittently struggles to start. It has stopped when he has put his foot on the clutch

What i have noticed is when both his and my car are side by side and with ignition in 2nd position his fuel pump is a lot noisier than my 2l diesel.

I have checked plenum drain an all is ok there.

Help please.

Are both (ITP and UBP) running? It may be that one has failed (the intank pump) and the under bonnet pump is struggling under load.

could not hear the rear pump working but if you remove the fuel feed at the filter you get fuel coming out.

The front pump seems to go on running for more than the recommended 30 - 60 seconds

Perhaps the ubp is not supplying enough fuel to the hp pump. Could be the sensor on the fuel filter head (low fuel pressure sensor) When was the fuel filter last changed?

Try running with the MAF unplugged.

Would that make the pump any quieter. What i have thought about doing is swapping my pump over to see if it makes any difference.

I take unplugging the maf would rule out the stalling problem.

No unplugging the MAF won't affect the UBP, but stalling at idle can be due to a faulty MAF.

A noisy UBP can be due to it being worn, a blockage somewhere on the low pressure side, or air getting in.

A drop in LP fuel pressure, detected at the sensor on the filter, usually puts the engine into limp mode, but if you have a spare UBP then well worth swapping them over.

Seems funny I new I had a use for my spare stethoscope, as its a bit noisy where we live, was able to slide stethoscope under squib and was able to hear pump running.

so doesn't answer noisy ubp, will have to check fuel line from ubp to engine

Its been a while now so I thought I better let you know what the problem was,

Fuel Filter solid/clogged although when I first met this guy he had just replaced the fuel filter which was why I never thought about looking at it, advised him to replace filter at least 6 times a year if not more.

The tank was full of gunge in the bottom, after draining tank you was able to scoop the gunge out with your hand.

So what is the best additive to put in the tank to break down any remaining residue.
