I have in the past seen the single red wire to the compressor break. Any way you can get 12v to the wire to see if the clutch engages?

I'll have a look Dave, is it under the compressor?
Found it, comes off a loom into a black plug. Looks fine

Hi Ron
Post seven on your thread, the wiring loom should lead up to inside the OS inner wing area.

Right, tried the trinary test again on the 2 wires nearest each other, shorted them with a better wire and the clutch kicked in so it's not that. So, does it simply need a regas, or something else

Ronnie
With bypassing the trinary switch the clutch engaged . This obviously indicates your not getting the trinary switch making a contact to engage the clutch
So looks like your going to have to take to a specialist or at least get some gauges on the refrigerant system to check the pressure . If the system pressure is within the switch parameters and the switch not making then I would suggest your trinary switch is faulty but my gut instinct is you have a leak somewhere on the system and your pressure has dropped below the switch set point .Obviously volume will create pressure . If it is a faulty switch or you have got a leak, the system is going to have to be recovered to carry out the repair anyway
Reading your post when you had your refrigerant re charged and no leaks found , did the technician check the Schrader valves on removing the gauges as they are a known leak point on all refrigeration systems

I've no idea what they did Steve, I left it with them for an hour or so, and when I went to pick it up, he just said all done, no leaks
Just been out to check the valves, & when I took off the high pressure cap, there was a little hiss, green liquid inside, the low pressure valve also had a little fluid inside. I'm waiting for a local mobile ac chap to call back.

A few years ago, I got one of those DIY aircon kits and I just remembered it has a gauge with it. So I popped it on the Low pipe and it only has 10 psi in it.
So there it is, low refrigerant Either I have a leak, or it wasn't done properly Thanks all for the help Without you lot there'd be a lot less cars on the road

Hi Ronnie, I have the same issue on my tourer and so it's got a leak some where. Last year in order to fix it , my mate who was working in a garage at that point, borrowed a light to check for air con leaks and thought he saw staining where the pipes run at the back of the engine against the sound deadening . I got a replacement pipe from Colin up in Bedlington with new O rings , and I also replaced the condenser as it was 18 years old. I got it regassed using a discount code at ATS and after an hour the machine had tested and regassed the system and I was good to go. After a couple of months the system was starting to blow warm again but the fan still kicked in along with the pump.

I didn't use the car as I recovered from Covid in January and when I started driving again in the summer , it's now back to the way it was again. My mate gave the valve a quick press and said there is nothing in the system !

I await to see how you get on and what you find .

Obviously some passing of at least one of Schrader valves , As found by patrol man Pete , Refrigerant leaks can be problematic to locate and repair . At least with an AC specialist you should be getting a competent technician to fault find your system .Obviously with the age of our cars, the potential for leaks is getting greater .
Good luck with getting it sorted Ronnie
