Brake Issue
Hi all,
I wonder if someone could give me an idea of where to start looking on this one please? My vehicle is a MKII 2.0Cdti. Sometimes, when I press the brakes, the pedal is rock hard, no servo assistance. It seems to happen more when the vehicle is cold, but not always. I cant hear any "hissing" noises that would suggest a vacuum leak or anything like that. If anyone could give me some pointers as to where to start looking for the problem or likely cause that would be great. Many thanks Richard

Check the vacuum pipe that goes to the EGR control valve - it runs from the vacuum pump on the end of the exhaust cam up beside the engine inboard of the battery and the control valve is bolted to a bracket above the starter motor on the front of the engine (or often dangling when the bracket breaks).

Thanks very much everyone.
It's really concerned me as I never know whats going to happen when I press the brake pedal! I need to sort this ASAP. The car has had some work done on it recently, and I know the area around the battery box has been disturbed. I wont be able to have a look at it until Sunday. Thankfully I only use the car at the weekend at the moment as it stays in my works car park. Thanks again everyone!

A big thank you to everyone.
Problem sorted. It was the little braded pipe that runs from the valve on the main hard plastic servo line to the head by the EGR, chaffed through. I'm supprised I had any servo pressure at all! Many thanks Nick, many thanks Arctic. At the moment it's cobbled together with a little pipe joiner from my aquarium, but it will be replaced as soon as I can get myself a new piece of pipe! Many thanks again!

Yes Jamie, the EGR has been mapped out, so I'll do that, block it off and forget it!
