From all my years of reading specs though; in a real race, torque won't impact performance. What seems to matter is how much power (torque * rpm) your get. That's why diesels with twice the torque and same horsepower are equally rated, or often even slower than their petrol equivalents.

Duel BMW E39 525i vs 530d below (sorry, been into those cars for a while, so makes up for an easy comparison ):

E39 525i | E39 530d
Power 192hp @6000 | 193hp @4000
Torque 245Nm @3500 | 401Nm @1750
0-100 kph 8.0s | 8.3s
0-180 kph 26.5s | 28.6s
1/4mile 16.1s | 16.3s
1 Km 29.1s | 29.3s
Top speed 231 kph | 230 kph

Where the 530d (and torque in general) shines is in everyday traffic, or if one's too lazy to shift:
80-120 kph in 4th - 9.3s | 6.8s
80-120 kph in 5th - 12.3s | 8.6s

Understeer = Hitting the wall with the front of the vehicle
Oversteer = Hitting the wall with the rear of the vehicle
BHP = How fast you hit the wall
Torque = How far you take the wall with you!
