so,quick update...took car to a garage in plymouth that i used once before...i like them, they seem ok but were a bit vague around putting a replacement rack back in...saying it could be a lengthy job and if it was not put in exactly right that it would have to come out and start again....didnt sound right...but i am no mech so wondered if anybody on the forum wants the job if i purchase replacement or can recommend someone...am willing to travel a fair way for this...

just had my steering rack replaced it was leaking where the steering column connects. leaking at a rate of one top up a week!
My garage quoted 2.2 hours for the job, it took them 3 hours as they need to drop the subframe slightly to get it. And the new one feels so much better. I use Sandy Garage in Par they looked after all my rovers for the bits I cant do. Mark |

Taking a steering rack off and replacing is an easy task, the steering rack itself is bolted to the subframe with 4 bolts and after dropping the exhaust or unbolting from the manifold and moving it out the way there is not much else to do, I would recommend trying another garage and having a comparison.

I have used these chaps for all my steering racks over the years including the ZT I have just restored and they are very good. They have the rack for about a week and they are only 20 minutes from you. I recommend them. http://www.kellybraysteering.co.uk/ Obviously they need your current rack or a spare. Price for my ZT was around the £180 mark.
