With the fuel tank dropped I did some remedial work on bits and bobs on the underside. All the corrosion was surface and nothing greater so nothing to panic about if you have one of these fine machines but as I had the rear subframe off it seemed silly not to do it. Most of the areas were around the body spot welds.

Some phots of the areas I was looking at.

areas attached with wire brush on the angle grinder

Then all the areas where the surface corrosion had been attacked was neutralised

IMG_20191224_150746 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Then primed with corroless then the whole area was undersealed

Finally the fuel tank was put back up ready to start the suspension fit up.

Next up the exciting part of fitting up the as new suspension.

only managed to grab a couple of hours today.

The rear subframe and upper arms placed under the car ready to fit.

IMG_20191228_161828 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

And safely fastened into position by the 4 x bolts all torqued to 100NM.
Some will notice i painted the plates over the subframe mounts. I did have them re zinced but decided for longevity to paint them in the same corroless paint.

I used an age old trick of building with blocks of wood under the subframe until it was sat very close to being in position then fitted the 4 x bolts.

IMG_20191228_170002 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Now for the build up.

Had a couple of good days over the xmas period and the rear is now complete apart from setting the handbrake.

I will split this into 3 posts (suspension, electrics and brakes)

Suspension build up. Ignore the calipers I just placed them in position so I could run everything in. The paint I used a couple of years ago didnt hold up too well so some remedial work required when i finish

As the upper arms were fitted before i fitted the rear subframe (ex torquing down final settings) the first thing to fit was the trailing arm and spring.

The spring was fitted with the insulators fitted to the spring then the bottom insulator fitted to the upper arm through the cam hole and twisted 90 degrees. Strangely the passenger side arm to spring was dead easy to fit but the drivers side was a pig. Both arms were bought from DMGRS but one over 12 months ago and the other a couple of months ago so i suspect a slight pattern change.

IMG_20191229_114857 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Another interesting thing I noticed was that I marked the position of the trailing arm brackets to the car underside. The drivers side bracket was set fairly central but the passenger side was set canted over so the trailing arm was being pushed out. Now I had not noticed any undue tyre wear but have I driven enough miles?

I fitted the passenger side trailing central as the drivers side as I will gte 4 wheel geometry alignment done once complete.

I hung the rear of trailing arm on the upper arm but did not tighten anything

IMG_20191229_120115 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Next up I fitted the shock. The trailing arm had to be lifted slightly to align the lower bolt into the trailing arm. I also kept the ZT dampers (not sure they do anything?)

IMG_20191229_205510 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

IMG_20191229_211046 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

The spring sat quite nicely with the shock fitted

IMG_20191229_211252 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Next up I fitted the ARB but did not torque any of the fastenings.

IMG_20191229_211017 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Finally the lower arm was fitted (again not torqued)

IMG_20191231_201046 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Both side fitted as per above and all the suspension components are in place.

Electrics.

Although mot difficult there are some electrics to run in on the rear suspension.

Firstly the rear suspension light height sensor was fitted. I refurbed the brackets, replaced the switch and changed the arms which were seized on the ball joints.

IMG_20191231_211403 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Next up I ran in the new ABS sensors.

The connector is under the rear seat and the line runs through the floor to the underneath

IMG_20200102_210923 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

The sensor was fitted into the back of the hub. I had to clear the hole to fit the sensor.

IMG_20200102_212428 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

The cabling run through new clips in the original position along with the pad wear sensor to the passenger side.

Thats the electrics complete

Brakes and hub

So the final leg was to fit the brakes and hub.

new back plates were fitted when i did the brakes a couple of years ago so I just painted them

IMG_20200104_194444 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Next up the drum shoes were fitted with new pins and springs. I find it easier to build up the shoes adjuster and cable connector off the backing plate and fit afterwards.

IMG_20200104_205537 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

The Hub was fitted. Make sure the reluctor ring is really clean and undamaged when fitting as this gives your ABS signal. This hub/bearing set was new a couple of years ago and the passenger side is new. The Hub mut was torqued to 220Nm (i think!).

IMG_20200104_210704 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

The disc was fitted over the pads and the hub nut knocked into the indentation.

IMG_20200105_160433 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Finally the set up complete. as I said just the shoes to adjust for the handbrake.

Finally pictures of the final fit up of the aft suspension in all its glory.

All the pivots and ARB fitted were finally torqued up once loads were on both axles.

Internal pivots (upper and lower arms) 120NM
external pivots (upper and lower arms) 100NM
Trailing arm bracket to underside of car 100NM
Arm to drop links and drop links to upper arm 60NM
ARB brackets 25 NM
Shock bottom bolt into trailing arm 155Nm

I am vary happy with how its turned out and i hope it feel as good when driving. The red springs ( which are lowering springs) and ARB look fine but I suspect wont look that good in a year or two

rear pads to set then onto the front.

I do enjoy the engineering and fitting up new and refurbed parts after the fight is always such a joy

Glad some enjoy the entire thread and hopefully it helps others
