Red face ABS fault, or is it ?

'53 Conny diesel manual saloon.
ABS light is on. No other warning lights. LCD dashboard.
No webasco.
Satnav is disconnected.
No alternator warning light.

TOAF will talk to COM3, will 'Scan' car successfully, gives, initially 4 (car) errors, subsequently 6, then 7 errors, which are saved on the laptop.

TOAF cannot find any modules (including ABS) with the exception of the radio (Alpine original), which returns what appears to be garbage.

Battery is low, but did start the engine with a jump starter.
Alternator voltage is between 12.8 and 13.5 volts @ ~2000rpm according to trip meter diagnostic (19,9).

While in neutral @ ~2000 rpm, engine suddenly stopped, without reason. Turned over on starter but refused to run. Several minutes later, it started ok.

When disengaging the starter motor, there seems to be a bang, possibly like a single backfire.

TOAF keeps on throwing up assorted error messages.

My initial suspicions are :

1) Faulty alternator.
AND
2) K bus or similar failing.

Tomorrow I will check battery and alternator connections for corrosion etc.
Also I will disconnect/contact cleaner spray, and reconnect engine fuse box connectors.

Any ideas would be welcome.

If it cannot be fixed, owner may have to resort to her broomstick.

One for the Gurus ?

Has the ECU been for a bath?

I don't think so. The tachometer is working, which implies the ECU is ok.

If the ABS light is on and the engine is running I'd say there's an ABS fault. Deal with the fault and post up the other problems. First check that the connections at the wheel sensors haven't become loose/detached, much posted on this fault.

The confusion comes with TOAF failing to communicate with the car which would tell you exactly where the ABS fault lies. I'm assuming the cable is known good? Is the OBD socket protected by a fuse?

I believe the Speedo is working ok, which is fed from the front offside ABS sensor.

Both front ABS sensors have been replaced by a garage.

The cable is new.

The fact that TOAF is able to read VIN, odometer, number of car faults, radio, et al implies that TOAF, the cable and the OBD socket is working ok.

The laptop was powered from the cigar lighter socket via a 12-19V step up power supply.

This was why I asked if the ECU had been wet, because there's a comms issue on the car and a wet ECM could explain the cutting out at 2k rpm. Seems the cable and socket are good. If TOAF can't see the ABS ecu, neither can the IPK. It could be solely an ABS issue, but I seriously doubt it. I'm sure Brian will diagnose this in seconds when he sees the thread.

whilst I remember, the older version of TOAF works best for me. I can't get live engine data with the latest version. Maybe worth trying the older version, it's still available on the TOAF site.

Most likely low battery is the cause, or if the engine is running a faulty alternator causing interference. Mine won't even register on T4 properly without the engine running even with a well charged battery. Always been like that - a bit of a head scratcher really. But it's sure that a bad alternator spewing all sort of electronic noise is going to interfere, and a low battery is going to cause problems.

I had exactly this fault when my son in law bought his car. TOAF would not read the ABS module and the dash light was on.
After lots of investigating, I found somebody had previously pulled the fuse for the ABS modulator and associated control unit. When the fuse was replaced, TOAF would read the ABS module, which reported a NSF sensor.
