Default Fluid Leak Advice Please.

Hi all

I have recently noticed fluid drops on the drive and upon investigation I seemed to have developed a new leak. It appears there are two areas of concern and I'm not sure if they are related or not.

Could anyone cast any light on the situation for me please.





My clutch seems to feel slightly different underfoot recently but don't know if this has anything to do with the leak.

The first one is probably clutch fluid, have you checked the master cylinder level? Second one look like a weeping oil seal on the drive shaft.

Many thanks for the reply.

I had the master cylinder replaced around six months ago so that was the first place I checked when the clutch pedal felt a little 'different'. That looks ok but I didn't check the clutch fluid level as it looks an awkward thing to get to.
I will check on the forums for the best way to do this.

If it is clutch fluid I presume it could be the slave cylinder that's on its way out?

As far as I know, fluid on the bell housing is a slave leak and at the pedal is a leaking master. My slave dumped the lot last week all over the undertray.

that's bad luck mate, did it effect your clutch plates? I've heard a broken slave cylinder can contaminate the plates.

So lucky I guess, clutch itself unaffected, will post pics of the disintegrated slave soon, keen to see if I can identify the make. Anyway, towed in (2 miles) slave fitted (supplied by myself) £150 for labour only

Yeah hope my clutch is the same, although it has done 64000 so might consider replacing the clutch while its in pieces.

One other possibility is for the fluid on the bell housing is engine oil, quite possible if it's ever had a head gasket failure. The rear crank seal could be leaking. You should be able to tell if it's wet enough to pick up on your finger the difference between hydraulic fluid and engine oil is easy to spot. Check the engine oil level over a period of time and see how it fares.

Either way the gearbox is going to have to come off for a repair so you can check both the slave and rear crank seal at the same time.

Ok I'll keep an eye on the oil level, its usually pretty constant so any change should be easy to spot.
