Tax bands were expanded circa 2006 IIRC vastly increasing the tax for higher polluters, though it is not retrospective so only the handful of 75s that somehow managed to get registered after then would be affected.

Cheapest 75 to tax is (to my knowledge) a Y-reg onwards 116 diesel manual. £180/year at the moment.
The date that they changed from engine capacity to emissions tax was the 1st March 2001.
I know that because the 1st March 2001 was the day that my car was registered, so I pay the higher road tax. (£285 last time for a V6).
Although the car was built on the 30th June 2000.

I always try to look on the bright side, though. If these cars were new, a 2.5 manual would be in Band L, costing £860.00 in the first year and £485 per year after that.
An auto would be in Band M, costing £1090.00 in the first year and £500 per year after.

It's looking like I should go for an early diesel then! It will be my toy car for tootling to my part time job (need that to pay for a car !). I want to travel in comfort but can't find an economical, comfy car with leather and wood ( I'm old fashioned I know!). I currently have an N reg 1995 Rover 414 with a mere 25K on the clock but want a bit more comfy.

My V6 2.0 is cheaper than my old 1.8 due to it being a W reg year 2000

Mike stick with your 414, the 75 won't be more comfortable

If you will not be doing much mileage a V6 would be cheaper to run.
Then you can add a smooth, lovely sounding, engine to the list.

Change of plan! A late diesel manual is cheaper on tax then? but there are more 1.8 petrols around it seems. Doh!
