cannot undo handbrake adjuster in car

Hi I am just about to fit a handbrake compensator but I am unable to unwind the nut on the handbrake, it just keeps turning, is there any way of holding the thread underneath the handbrake so as to undo the adjuster.

Sounds like it's been wound down too tight because the compensator has stretched so much, try holding the threaded part with molegrips with cloth wrapped around to protect the thread

Failing that, you'll have to release the cable from the compensator & try loosening it.

Moles didn't do any good, will dremel the nut off tomorrow

I admit I'm nut fully with you, if the nut keeps turning has the thread been stripped? of has it been wound off the end of the threaded rod?
I think this will do what you you are asking about and its a neat trick.
2 more nut onto the thread.
when both on hold the second nut you put on and undo the first nut. this will cause the 2 nuts to lock together
hold the second nut you put on and undo the original nut.

if the threaded rod turns in the two nuts you put on, then hold the second nut and "undo" the first to tighten them together some more.

I was just about to let you know that i was going to try that.

Thats why it pays sometimes to shut the doors have a cuppa and chill out.

macafee2 beat me to it as well, but for the uninitiated (post meccano generation) lock nutting 2 nuts then holding them will allow the nut you wish to release to move.
Then of course there's the other method, when a nut appears not to unwind, tighten first then unwind.

If the nut keeps turning then it has indeed 'stripped' the thread. The best chance is as suggested, lock another nut onto it and try again. Failing that, it will have to be as you say, cut through the nut.

Edit:- when the nuts are locked together, try undoing both at the same time, slowly, using 2 spanners.

you can get a nut splitter cheaply from ebay...

Nut job didnt work, hard place to work in, as you can gather not much space, so out with the old dremel which worked, all going back together now.
