Default Neglected maintainence

The one thing I seem to have failed to maintain is my trailer.
I have had it some 20 or more years. I paid £40 for it but with a new hitch, lock and cover the total came to £100. It is a lightweight 6 x 4 trailer but worth its weight in gold to me.

A few years ago a cyclist broke on of the mudguards when it was parked but I managed to make a repair.

A couple of weeks ago the mudguard broke again and to my shock and horror the chassis has holes in it. I think from rain spray as the holes are inline with the wheels and on the rear cross member.

A local engineering place has agreed to cut our the 3 rusted bars and weld new ones in place for £120, I was hoping for £100. I have used them before, they are friendly, accommodating and good so I did not haggle.

I have picked up the steel bars they will be using, cleaned the grease off on the top side and will paint leaving gaps where they will be welding. I will then paint the rest once I get the trailer back as I think I am short of paint.

I will have to see if I can fit "splash" guards to prevent the same thing happening again.

Good luck with the repair. I often feel like a spinning plate act with potential jobs spinning in hidden places. At least you spotted it before going 50mph somewhere with a load resting on the last legs of a rusty crossmember.

Boy did I neglect mine for a number of years

I went to town stripping it down removing all the rust from the frame, painting it & putting new marine ply & new tyres on it, It lives in the double garage out of the weather these days.

I'm in the process of restoring mine. 1940's Aero Trailer.
