Personally, I clay bar it to remove tar and any other contaminants

White Spirit is the cheapest option. Once the spots are removed, wax the area again.

I agree, white spirit will remove it aswell. (Eventually ) The only problem is, is that it will leave a oily residue on the area, whereas the other stuff doesn't.

Use autoglym tar spot remover and it literally wipes off with no effort at all.

Default Autoglym

Hello mate

I would recommend Autoglym Tar and glue. Best results pour it into a spray bottle spray on leave it for a few minutes then wipe with a clean cloth.

Ex Valeter here works wonder on my 75 and Civic.

Meguiars Body Solvent is good stuff or Tarminator if you can get it.

Tar is a real problem up here, everybody's car gets covered in it. The useless cold tar plop that they use as a quick fix for potholes is the worst I find.
