Default Starter motor problem , but have I fixed it ?

My 2.0 v6 failed to start the other day , with the starter motor making a clunking noise but not turning the engine over . Having checked connections , I followed the general advice and ordered a repair set of copper contacts and solenoid plunger . I fitted this today , and as the old contacts were heavily worn and pitted I felt confident when I went to start the car But no , again the clunking noise Tried 3 times then got out the car and gave the tyres a good kicking . I then thought , try one last time before ordering a full motor and guess what - it fired up ok. It has started every time since .
But why did I initially get the clunk ; did my repair not fix the problem and then I just got lucky with something else fixing itself ? Or is this how it goes ?
Anyone else had a similar experience with the kit , or got any thoughts ?
