On your question of is this a record, after my clutch hydraulics failed in just over a year the person fixing it said he had had the hydraulic components fail straight out of the box and all the manufacturers available now were supplying very poor quality components that can fail in a short time. Just pot luck on what you get supplied if it lasts.

zt-t clutch horrers.
complete luk unit ( slave, master , driven and pressure plates ) replaced 900 miles ago. replaced again today and failed within 9 miles. Now that's a record. work carried out by mg rover specialist with years and years experience. The guy ensured it wasn't manufactured in Cyprus or some other micky mouse manufacturing outfit. What else are we supposed to do, make spares ourselves???

The design of the clutch together with slave and master cylinder location does seem to be the ZT CDTI / 75 equivalents Achilles heel.
I scrapped a 2004 ZT after replacing all as could not bring myself to do again. Bought an identical car in December 2016 that had had a new clutch that Autumn. It was replaced again in early 2018 and then once more later that year and for now seems to be ok: touch wood. If it goes again another one for the scrap heap. Never had to replace the clutch (in service) on any other car other than when having transmission out for say major work. |

I am getting more than worried reading the above.
I've just spent a small fortune on my ZT to get it through it's MOT test, suspension work, ALL new brake pipes and flexi brake hoses, plus all the other stuff I've done myself since I've bought the car, and the clutch I need to get done ASAP as the clutch pedal feels as heavy as the brake pedal, and now it seems to have dropped 1/4 of an inch before it does anything. Surely a clutch should be able to be replaced and have some longevity in it? I was speaking to a bloke just last week ( no-one off here ) who had a 75 -T , his also a diesel, he had had the car a while, the clutch had suddenly given way ( the concentric slave ) and the cost of getting it replaced with the other items that it needed for the MOT just was't worth it for him. Is it down to the quality of LUK clutches?

My 75.
I did the clutch on the 75 two years ago, I added an extra master cylinder behind the clocks for ease of filling and quantity of fluid, it was fine for 5000 miles until the box failed, because of the eye problems I'm only now about to mend it with a fresh box that's in the boot! I used LUK parts.

Whenever I do finally change my car, I have a list of requirements:-
Petrol. Non-turbo. Automatic (preferably Jatco). (If I did get a manual, it would have to have a light clutch with an external slave cylinder or cable). As few electronic gismos as possible.
