Was under the impression the the diodes were part of the rectifier in an alternator.
All the same in our cars - regulation and rectification is carried out in the electronic pack on the back, which also houses the brushes.

Yann is trying to either get the car repaired by the garage that sold the car or a refund, this is likely to take some time as it's going though legal avenues for resolution
