Default Rusty ski hatch

9Hi.

Just checking over a 2004 contemp 75 saloon i just bought. Pushing the ski hatch forward i noticed crunching sound.
At the bottom of the ski hatch it is all rusted and crumbling. This can be seen behind the material that covers the hatch frame. The black rubber soundproof material that backs onto the boot behind the rear seats has white marks that look like mould. The car is very dry though and car is immaculate outside (other than rear window trim) and interior(not ski hatch) and seats are as new.
The car has only done 34k and 23 of that was in 1st 3 years. It had done on average just over 1k a year since then.
Is this normal?

What could have caused it as car is not damp inside . Maybe lack of use over the years and the ski hatch got wet and never dried out? Its very odd

Possibly a flooded wheel well... run a hose over the back end and check for leaks there or in sun roof drains...
