Default change fluid auto box how do you find out oil temp

reading the jatco instructions for the gear box oil change and one thing thats bothering me is how do you find out the oil temp in the gearbox with out draining any to see if its in tempreture range to add or allow the level to drop when full.

not doing my oil yet but plan on doing it in the next few weeks

You use T4 to do it. I understand that those who have done this DIY drain the box, measure what came out and put back the same amount. I guess you pay your money and take your choice.

one of the places that have t4 said they could not do the fluid change as there t4 needs a code to get information or privliges to use the t4 to do the oil change.

think i will leave the oil change until next year then as im not paying £100 for it to go onto a t4 to get that done as can get it done cheeper in notts

Checking the temp is easy if you have a cheapo air conditioning service-man type thermometer.
They look a bit like a small meat thermometer (ask your wife) or see here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AIR-CONDIT...#ht_4101wt_982

Mine has a little bigger dial and reads in C & F.

Just insert the probe in the filler hole of the gear box. These thermometers are pretty accurate and are very fast in responding. You'll get a steady reading in 10 - 15 seconds. No need to send loads of cash on a digital one made in China or Taiwan These are very robust.

Check the level at around 40 degrees C or 105 degrees F

Once you own one of these thermometers you'll find a hundred uses for it - just don't let your wife get her hands on it or you'll never see it again!

Default Auto box fluid

I would dearly love somebody to tell me what difference in fluid level there is in the Jatco box between warm and the specified temperature? I refuse to believe that there would be a great deal of difference. In the three boxes on which I have done a fluid change I just drive for 10 miles afterwards and then check the level. I have had no problems. THE LEVEL PLUG IS ON THE BOTTOM. Do not undo anything on the sides of the box.

Good point wuzerk - I don't believe there can be that much of a difference either.

Good warning about not undoing any other bolts on side of the box. Apparently lots of folks think the filler hole is there - sadly no. You land up with no reverse gear and the box needs to be removed to fix it I believe. Horrors.

All the same for £4.95 post free you can get an American made thermometer that does the job and lots of others too.

ps I'm not selling them, or on commission - I just find them extremely useful and think that every toolbox should have one.

The T4 will use resistances to measure the temperature of the box, but it is easy to do yourself with a multi meter across pins 7 and 8 of the gearbox connector by the battery.
The resistances are as follows:

1.7Kohm at 35c
1.16Kohm at 40c
1 Kohm at 45c

See connector details.

Hope this helps

Matt

You won't get much better than just google images for Rover Jatco Drain Plug / Jatco Filler Plug and Jatco Check Level Plug

Also check the LandyZone as they have lots of info re the Jatco box on there.
