Going to have a go at cleaning my MAF with some switch cleaner spray before deciding whether to replace it or not.

Having worked through 3 genuine bosch ones at £170 a pop, just how bad can a third party one be at £26?

Fitted it and works fine, power is restored, no smoke, and nice smooth acceleration through the revs. I've been wearing out a bosch one every 4 years, so even if I need to replace this one every year it still works out cheaper.

I regard it as an experiment, not a recommendation, but parting with £170 on the strength of bosch's reputation for quality, only to have it fail 3 times over 170,000 miles tells me that these things are a bit hit and miss whoever you buy from. Some owners report having had 130,000 miles out of 1 maf, but mine fail consistently around 50k.
Hi David
Six months as past since you fitted the above MAF any feed back please on how it all went cheers Arctic

Default MAf

Slightly off topic but I've just bought one from here;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1313552628...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Seems like a competetive price for a Bosch one.

Hi Andrew
Yes that is the genuine one with it's own housing there is an insert you can buy which is a BMW one, but the insert is identical to the one above, link below.

From ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1312514049...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

From direct company
http://www.maf-shop.com/product_info...76fa56f4b41c8d

And the long thread about how the BMW one came about

I'd be interested to know how things are with the aftermarket item - although all aftermarket MAFs do seem to be hit and miss, surely they wouldn't still be on the market if they were all defective.

I won't ever be stocking them, just food for thought that's all.

If the car runs reasonably, who would know if the new MAF was way out?

You can buy complete fakes, you can buy units which are just dummies and you can buy genuine Bosch MAF's which area almost right for the 75.

The 75 will run with no MAF, it will run with a dummy MAF and it will run with the above MAF. It might not produce best performance and economy, but unless you have the equipment to test it - you will never know.

The MAF-Shop in Berlin is the only known source of the pukka item, but there are two choices...

1. A fully genuine MAF in its proper duct designed for the 75, but that costs around £130.

2. The genuine MAF and correct model MAF, but mounted in a similar duct designed for a BMW which costs around £75 delivered. All you do is transfer it straight into your 75 duct. The downside is that there is no guarantee, because you have to break the seal.

Some ebay sellers are even reselling item 2, but with their own guarantee at £100. Trouble is, its ebay - you still have to decide which are the pukka ones from the rest.

Lots of us have bought item 2 checked the figures produced and found them to be spot on.

That suggests Bosch were telling porkies when they suggest the MAF is individually calibrated to the housing, in their attempts to have us pay almost twice as much.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Back on track hopefully David will let us know how the MAF he bought performed or performs if still fitted, and if so as he seen any drop in it or any other reaction from it cheers Arctic
