Default Fan

Hi all, could you help me with an issue. I've read that the main fan can make a whooping noise that can be cured by the gold resistor mod. However the fan on my 2.5V6 75 is on all the time, I've even disconnected the battery for several minutes and it starts up again as soon as I reconnect the battery. Will the resistor cure this or is the whole fan Kaput?
I have emailed & PM'd Jules but no answer yet so I'm guessing he's on holiday.
Thanks
Steve

The "gold resistor mod" is not a mod but merely results in replacing a failed resistor with one that still works as a resistor i.e. is not open circuit. If your fan stays on then I would say the resistor is not your problem but more likely the control box - perhaps a stuck relay?

Someone with knowledge of the V6 fan control box will no doubt provide a more detailed response.

As mss says Steve, the ‘gold’ resistor restores a failed slow speed so forget about that. Try removing fuse 4 in the underbonnet fuse box. Does the fan stop now? If yes, look for wiring loom damage. If no, suspect a faulty relay in the control box.

No, the whole fan is not kaput.

Fuse number 4 is for the automatic gearbox Simon, to avoid confusion let the OP know you are referring to the 80A fusible link screwed to the central busbar

It also supplies the cooling fan relay coils (see Rover 75 Electrical Library RCL0539(2)ENG).

To avoid confusion I am not referring to the 80 amp FL4.

Noises of that type are typically from the aircon system. Does it stop when you turn the aircon off?

Hi checked the fuses and the relay associated with the fan and all is ok, but when i reconnect the battery the fan comes on and stays on - still...doh

Hi T-cut, no this is when everything is off no key in the ignition, I can only stop it by disconnecting the battery, then it starts again when I reconnect the battery - no key in the ignition.
