I had a heart stopping moment today, when i thought i had lost my car key, luckily i found it, but i only have the one key, and if i had lost it, i would have been up the creak, So,
i can get a new key with the pcb chip etc, no problem, i can get it cut hopefully locally, now heres my main question, can TOAF scan in new keys , and can someone talk me though the sequence i already have TOAF, i think its the latest issue, i understand some will, some won't i don't want to erase my existing key, but to add another once I've ordered it, and got the blade cut

Hi Martin,

You can use TOAF to "pair" a new or used PCB with your BCU, this will get remote locking/unlocking working. Here's some instructions: https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...62&postcount=2

You'll need to use the old version of TOAF though (version 0.5.00.43). Be sure to make a back-up of the module before making any changes, just in case something goes wrong.

The transponder chip and EWS (immobiliser) are a separate entity though. For that, you'll either need T4 (I assume it can do this, never used it myself) or something like an EWS Editor Lite. This needs to be a brand new chip, you can't reuse an old one.

Martin, what is included in "etc"? As Matt has explained, the printed circuit board (PCB) deals with central locking only. It has no rôle in starting the engine. For that, your key will also need a brand new transponder. This is the little black cuboid separate to the PCB and sometimes referred to as the "chip". This risks confusion because a "chip" is an integrated circuit mounted on a PCB!

For clarity it's best to avoid using the term "chip" and refer to the PCB (for central locking) and the transponder (for immobilisation of the engine).

The official source is BMW in Germany who can supply a brand new key complete with both PCB (central locking) and transponder (immobilisation) programmed to your car. This service is expensive.

So might it be cheaper to have a car key specialist cut and program a second key, i think its about £200, so not something i can really afford at the moment until i've built my bank balance back up a bit.

No need to go to Deutschland. BigRuss near Leeds will sort you out. Get a blank key cut locally, remove your EWS and post up to him at Leversedge. Quick turnround, far cheaper than Bavaria. A really lovely man.

Unfortunately Martin, I very much doubt that you'll find a car key specialist able to program a new blank transponder to your car.

Last I heard was a key through "official channels" was over £200 plus VAT.

Be careful, I remember Brian saying some less scrupulous places offer to program a new transponder but in fact copy the one in the existing key and it will fall out of sync with the rolling code in the EWS (security system) in the car rendering it useless.

As stated Russ is the man to speak to, he did a key for me some time ago, my 260 only had one key and the guy I bought it from lived in the same town as Russ. I'm sure there are others but nobody has maintained the list of bods capable of doing keys. I'd add the info to my T4 map but need the base info to start with.
