Default cancellation travel insurance

Going to France in the MG this summer and trying to find insurance to cover cancellation only. I have bought RAC 5* cover for the car which includes unlimited recovery to the UK and not just the value of the car, hotels, hire car and trip home. I have tried all the usual sources but all want a huge excess (£100 plus) and with my E111 why do I need medical cover? Reason being is that the Memsahibs mother is quite old and may or may not take a turn for the worst. She is not coming with us!

Whenever I have taken out insurance of this type, there has been an item in the T&C's that the there should not have been an expectation of the reason for cancellation occurring at the time that the insurance is taken out.

If you are able to get cover, it would be worth making sure that it is actually going to cover for the secenario that you have identified as the risk. An excess of say £100 to £150 for a family holiday insurance does not seem excessive IMO.

Thanks for the advice. Travel insurance has got a lot more expensive than the last time I bought it. I can't see the point of it for a trip to France as I can use my E111 if I am taken ill. There are no flights to be cancelled or expensive hotels so I can't really see why I am paying it except for the cost of the ferry and the cottage I am renting. They all seem to be based on flying. I have RAC defacto 5* breakdown cover for the trip which covers onward travel, hotels and return to the UK with no limit recovery on my 19 year old MGF which is more than anyone else would offer. I think any excess is a downright liberty the money they charge.

It is worth having a read here

http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthc...einFrance.aspx

As the ehic (e111) card may not provide as much cover as you expect. In a lot of cases you have to pay upfront and the cost of the ambulance is only covered if a doctor says you need one. Also worth noting that most dentists in france charge a top up fee on top of the state funding.

I have worldwide family travel insurance, European breakdown, family mobile phone insurance all included with my bank account at a cost of £10 a month so £120 a year for all of it and it covers pre existing medical conditions. the breakdown is get you home as well. I think that is very good value.
