I changed my 2.0 CDT auto for a 1.8T manual 5 weeks ago and I have to say I like it just as much. Getting a good return on mpg, plenty of acceleration, the diesel version may be more reliable with its BMW engine, but after driving the 1.8T I will not be changing back in a hurry.

I always thought the 1.8 was up to the job to be honest. My first 75 was a 1.8. The only engine I think that struggles is the 2.0 diesel in 116PS form and even worse with the auto.
Even had no trouble pulling our 800kg caravan either. |

Lads, please lets tone it down a bit, otherwise 1.8 models will jump UP in price
I have to agree with the comments on this thread. I have owned 3 diesels, 1 V6 and a V6 auto and I'm more than satisfied with my 1.8. It has had HGF (no damage to engine) however even taking this into account, for the mileage and condition of the car, it is still a bargain. If Rover had fitted the upgraded head gasket from new I think many K series engined vehicles (Freelander, MGF/TF etc) would be valued a fair bit higher.

My 1.8T always drove superbly. Great mixture of performance and economy. Just a shame it had that cut out bit of cornflakes packet between the block and the head.
Fine engine with it's reputation ruined by one simple problem. Will never go back to a petrol now though.
