A couple of gold stars for the 1.8
Just got back from our weekend break to Dunster (I will be doing some reports with lots of pictures and information) and must say I'm over the moon with the way my 75 performed.
First off my overall fuel consumption was 42.8 mpg, I had the speed monitor set on the computer and did not go over 70mph. I found the performance more than adequate. I have read that 1.8's don't do hills, well mine seemed to cope very well indeed. There are a couple of long climbs on the way back to Kidderminster from Somerset. One is on the approach to the Bristol junction, the other is closer to home and at present subject to road works. The first one I covered in 5th gear at 70mph with a a tad over 3000rpm showing. The 75 pulled better than The Pussy Cat Dolls in a bar full of men! She did not strain at all. The second was in a section restricted to 50mph, again 5th gear all the way to the top with no problem at all. The secret to driving with this engine is to use the revs.

Glad you had a good run nothing better in absolute comfort.
There is a misconception about the performance of the 1.8's, many see them as the underdog and the poor relation of the marque but in reality the engine has some real poke and certainly loses no performance whilst cruising along the highways. Ok you won't get pinned into your seat pulling away from traffic lights but that's not what the car is designed to do, pull off naturally steady and relaxed.

again with the 1.8t,once you get to know it and keep it spinning it pulls very well.
the correct timing of gear changes essential. driven under 3,000 rpm, very economical |

i've never really thought of the 1.8 as being slow, just relaxing!!!
admitidaly it lacks low down torque (swapping from my galaxy means a mind adjustment!!) but for everyday use and running costs i find it ideal for me , some people may not be happy with it . |

Well when you take HGF out of the equation - what problems does the 1.8K have? None to my knowledge.
In theory then - the 1.8K with a properly sorted head should be just, if not more, reliable than the 2.0 Diesel and the KV6s. And thats the great thing about the k4 - cheapish tax, good mpg, better to drive thanks to the engine being considerably lighter than the other engines, easy & cheap servicing, long service intervals (15k or 1 year), theoretically should be less likely to suffer from early clutch & transmission failure and of course - less wear on the front tyres! So although the 1.8 is deemed to be the worst engine - when you look at it overall - it could potentially be the cheapest to run and the most reliable! |
