On a petrol engine I'd guess the carburettor would be the main sticking point - compared to modern fuel injection which can adjust instantly if the emissions aren't right, carbs were actually pretty bad at providing accurate fuelling across all situations.
I remember a warranty mod on 1.1 Metros (SU carb, I think ?) which involved adding a tiny external damper to the throttle linkage to stop the engine revs dying if you took your foot off the accelerator quickly. Very 'agricultural' really and didn't actually fix the design fault, hiding it instead We probably don't appreciate just how good modern ECU controlled injection is nowadays.

The old lifeboat diesel engines I used to work on had nothing electrical on them at all.

bit connected to your question Clive to which unlike some I have no useful opinion and if Im highjacking Im sorry but my question is the IPK? electronic display on our cars, is its accuracy i.e. its readings something that can be checked?adjusted or whatever? That's four question marks - that may be a record for me. Thankyou all. Chris S.

All Cars manufactured after 2014 (if I recall Correct) are required to have some from of "Electronic Stability Control" - I doubt this would be possible without an ECU ?

The suggestion is a car without these features is inherently unsafe but I reckon the safety of a car 100% depends on the person behind the wheel. A moron can drive the safest, most tech-filled car on sale and cause a fatal accident with ease. |

Imagine the old school dudes loading their tool chests with feeler gauges dwell meter timing light compression tester and similar tools. Imagine the look on the face of a modern tech asking them to do full ignition service .
I would love to witness a contact set fitted and set to spec.... Love the good old days ! |
