Possibly a carbon impregnated filter so not as bad as it looks?

Yes Herman, that is the sad truth indeed. But I thought there was no harm trying the keep the moisture away, since I had valve in plain view.

I still have a spare valve tucked away in my garage before I need to resort to the Black Olive heater valve.

Dunno. Didn't look like it was a carbon filter. It looked fairly white in some areas on the second picture.
I would be interested to know the how quickly the cabin filter would get to this state, based on UK driving environment.

Actually it is the reverse bog standard T4 does not like the V8 much especially if run on Omitecs original Windows 98 incarnation. However run T4 on something like W2K3 server and use a mounted ISO image for the data CD and a lot of problems go away or did for me.
