Probably have been better to start a new thread...

But...

AFAIK no; I replaced both L & R inner tie rods recently with these items off eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2205208978...84.m1423.l2649

Exactly the same as the VW Sharan item etc...

It may be an idea to replace the CV boots etc but that's it; no need to load with grease (I may be wrong but mine didnt need this doing)

I found this thread might have answered my own needs but on buying one I can confirm they are too short for the V8 no doubt a longer one is available.

Once I have my repairs sorted I may look into it.

The only other observation as can be seen in the pictures
The original are not supposed to be replaced hence no flats to allow them to be unscrewed

They are fitted to the rack then spot welded to lock them.
Easy enough the undo with a pair of Stilsons but something like Locktite must be used when fitting the replacement unless you can do another spot weld.

The V8 units are identical except 30mm longer. All of which is on the round rod.

So get a machine shop to make you up a 30mm extension??

Much more cost efective than a new rack!!

Exactement! I cut 30 mm out of the old unit, and cut the shorter rod. Chamfered all 4 ends 45 degrees and welded in the section, let it cool while using a wet rag on the ball joint.
For those that are not keen on that, there are options of threading or of welding a sleeve on the outside.
The original unit has a waist cut into it, and it will break here if subjected to abnormal force. Mine did.

There is little option of forcing the ball out of the socket, it has been crimped using several tons. So the extension, one way or the other, seems to me the only realistic option, in the absence of the original item.

Hi

These can be removed with the rack in situ but a special tool is required
