This is not that new a phenomenon, I remember RWD Cavaliers and Manta's would need a new spring most years for an MOT. |

As manufacturers strive to make things even lighter, quicker and cheaper, longevity will suffer. I saw a lovely Model T recently, on its original chassis and springs!!!

Guy parking a Vaux Insignia at work on Monday, going lock to lock to squeeze into a tight spot. *Bang* We all looked over...
"Sounded like a spring?" said I. "It's already on its second front pair, and the car's not two years old yet." So it's not just us! |

Well, I guess I have led a sheltered life - springwise . In a previous life I had a Quattro Turbo Coupe set up for no-budget rallying. I did engine and diff related tweaks and put in a cage. We did a couple of winter rallies and didn't break anything - not even a factory original spring. The car was 10 years old and had a hard life.
Cheers, Glenn

I think it all comes down to the poor metal quality used in modern vehicles. When I was on an MB forum those with newer models were always breaking springs while those of us with older W124 W126 etc models had very few problems.

It's not just these cars. My wife bought a 52 plate corsa in 2013, after her original corsa was written off. When she bought it it had 50,000 miles on the clock and had already had new springs all round. A couple of years later I jump in her car to take it round to the back to give it a clean, drove about 50 feet and there was a bang, followed by a clang, still drove find so took it round the back then walked back to look and see what it was that had fallen off. Found 4 inches of the front right spring in the road. A few months later it failed the MoT for a snapped front passenger side spring.

Ive made comment before re the amount of springs you guys seem to break. You would think that somewhere like here (Australia) you would also see it but I’ve never seen a 75 here with a broken spring.
Has to be somthing to do with the road conditions although we drive a bit on gravel roads when out in the country but at worst you get corrugations. |
