Why so many broken springs?
Hi folks,
So, what's the deal with all the broken springs? It seems to be such a common occurrence - so much so that I think there was even a recall related to them years ago. I've been driving for almost 50 years and have never had a broken spring. I have driven American, Japanese & European cars - many, many cars and only 2 from new. Some of those cars have gone more than 300,000 kms on the original springs. A significant number of cars and kms were on the east coast of Canada where cars have been considered disposable over the years because of rust. So, what's the deal with all the broken springs? Surely aftermarket sport spring manufacturers who can make springs that don't break for virtually any other car in the world can make some for MG/Rovers. Even the ones I have seen for sale in Europe from France, Germany & Austria have had springs replaced. I have German Tein springs on my Maxima and the thought of one of them breaking has never crossed my mind. A couple of years ago those springs carried us across Canada - 6,000 kms - with the car jam packed to the gunwales well in excess of the max GVW. And they are still good today. Curious, Glenn

Glenn - you need to see the state of many of our roads to know the answer.
In fact we just got an email from Citroen UK inviting us to bring our Cactus in for a 'free' pothole damage check. Not just springs; it's tyres, rims and pretty much any of the underpinnings that take a beating.

Yes, most of our roads here are similar to that. They won't fix them properly. Usually they will drop some asphalt in the potholes in late summer/early fall, but by the first freeze/thaw cycle the patches are breaking up. We learn to avoid the puddles because they could be 6" deep! The only time they are smooth is when they are full of hard packed snow.
In the latest money-grab here RCMP are ticketing people who swerve around the potholes trying to avoid car damage - to the tune of $385. Parts and service businesses must be donating to the Secret Policemen's Ball. But we still don't seem to suffer the same broken spring rate (see what I did there ) as with MG ZT/Rover 75 specifically. BTW, would a mod be kind enough to fix my typo in the subject line, please? Cheers, Glenn

It's essentially a seasonal topic, but fractures do happen all year round to all makes of cars. The statistics rise during the colder months of the year and there's a lot of technical and anecdotal stuff relating to road spring fracture on-line.
Here's a Forum search, which should answer all your questions: https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=013872...ure&gsc.page=1 Keep an eye out next week. The UK is in for a good blast of Siberian air. TC |
