I didn't have one of those on mine (1.8T). But I did change that stud to a bolt as I recall.

Looks like a non standard nut for a Rover.
My wife's Citroen has some nuts like that. Maybe it has a French origin.--- |

Hmm, looks exactly like a nut that I helped a friend remove when we attacked his engine.
It was in fact a standard 6 sided nut that was corroded to the point is was unrecognisable and I would say that's what you've got there. The easiest way to remove is take the whole exhaust manifold off and hammer a smaller socket onto it. Otherwise you'll have to slit some of it off with a grinder and then it'll come away

If it's the one I recon it is you might struggle to get it onto it.
Either way it'll be 10x easier with the mani off

Used a 6 pointered socket.. and its off , well the stud came out . hex going back in ..
So after a total of about 3months waiting for the Rain/Snow/Cold/Winter to clear off .. So the Turbo is off .. new Core in box waiting.. and reckon it does need it .. and may the reason for the smoke VIDEO

Isn't this the same shape as ones that hold either the bottom engine mount or the drive shaft bracket on bottom back of the diesels. They're weird little things but catch a impact socket. I can't remember which it holds but definitely looks the same.
