It does not come on at an amount left in the tank, rather it works on the remaining fuel range. It calculates the range, based on your present consumption and comes on if the range is less than a pre- determined range.

Which means the light can appear if the tank is low and you have just started it cold, then later go back off.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

On the 1.8 ZT-T, it comes on when it calculates that you've got 50 miles left in the tank.

It not that clever.

2004 Handbook

The range to empty can be displayed at any time by asking the trip computer, but only if you have the HiLine system.

I understood we had established that the handbook was wrong?

That it does not behave that way, that it doesn't come on at a set quantity of fuel. It can be off when I park up, come on as I restart, then go back off again once on the road. In other words - more rapid consumption can bring it on. The actual gauge itself, at lower fuel levels - can rise rise and fall with varying consumption rates.

All of that suggests the gauge display and warning light are based on a calculated range, rather than a quantity of fuel remaining. It is set up so as to deliberately panic the driver, before it runs out. Even if the HiLine system is not installed, the range calculation will still be done and the result available to the rest of the system.

I've never been convinced by the conclusion made from the on/off warning light, but I would be if there was good data. I think it needs more on the road tests to gain a better understanding of the system. I'll make the hypothesis that if one driver gets the warning at 100mph and another driver gets it at 20mph, they'll both have a similar amount of fuel in the tank at that point. It needs to be tested using the float rheostat readings in these conditions. It won't get done unfortunately, so we'll never really know.

How about using the dash button menu yo get the fuel sender readout? That will tell you how much is in the tank won't it?
