This is a quote from the DVSA blog:

"Q. How insecure does a battery have to be before it should be failed?

A. The battery must be so insecure such that it is unrestrained and likely to fall from its vertical position when the vehicle is in its presented condition (i.e. bonnet / access panels closed). A battery that is not strapped down and is moving around inside a battery box does not justify a failure, as it cannot fall from the carrier."

Makes sense, it's not like it can move far.

I have the same problem on my Rover 25 after buying an Exide Premium EA754. Click

I've just bought a Halford's universal battery clamp currently at £4.49, expecting a bit of fettling here or there but hopefully it will do the job. Click

Thank you for all the replies. I have fitted the Bosch S5010 battery as I tend only to use it at weekends. I think I shall tuck away the strap and clamp and keep the old 096 battery as a spare. If necessary I can always refit it before an MOT. Many thanks for all the replies.

In Spain they are not allowed to remove the cover.

I replaced the battery in my ZT-T 2 years ago. The new battery fits neatly into the box but it's too tall to allow the lid to fit but it is clear of the underside of the bonnet when closed, it also has a fitted rubber cap over the live terminal. It is not strapped down and this has never been mentioned in the last two MOT tests.

Can I ask WHY ours needs the strap..........when other cars are perfectly legal with just a securing clamp at the bottom ??

I believe when people refer to the strap, they are referring to the clamp and the strap. The longer than recommended batteries take up the space that is normally used by the clamp.

I actually don't see the point of buying a battery larger than the 096/100. These are only 2l diesel and 2.5l petrol engines and a good quality 096/067/100 should last a very long time. If the battery is being regularly depleted due to short journeys then the extra 10%-12% of capacity is not going to save it.

Should I leave the battery strap on top or cut it off. I'm worried about the metal clip at the end wandering around near the battery terminals.
The battery fitted is too big, take it back and replace with a 096. The straps are there for a very good reason, not to look pretty. They are a MOT safety requirement and will fail if not secured. If car was to roll over an unsecured battery dangles by cables which can come off causing a spark, then BOOM!! or a fire in the electronics.
