Default IPK or not ?

Is it worth retro fitting an IPK now ?

They look good and show a lot more information than those without.

But, New screens are now unobtainable, and delining is only temporarily putting off the inevitable it seems from some posts and nothing looks worse than an IPK that is unreadable or looks like a foreign language cos hal thelines are missing.

I got a brand new MG 7 IPK screen off e-bay last year - so you may still be able to get new screens.

I think one of the trades her can supply them.
Each to their own, I fitted one, got it from a scrap yard for £10, does have a few lines
but I'll keep going to scrap yards to see if I can pick up one or two more.
I do use it just to get some idea of what's going on

I've been told I can plug one into my car to test with no ill effects

I have one fitted to my car and honestly never use it. It doesn't give me any info that I find I need and the yellow screen spoils the ambiance of the dash, especially during darkness.

For my money I wouldn't bother retrofitting.

I think you mean the Highline version. All models have an IPK, it's the complete instrument pack. Some have Highline (the computer screen providing realtime info) and some don't.

I stand corrected, you are right.

There’s only one reason I retrofitted one to my 2000 V6 - which was to use the digital speedometer feature. I find it much more convenient to monitor the car’s speed using it rather than the analogue gauge.

When I bought my latest car with a dreadfully lined message centre the top priority was to send it off to Rick for magic. And magic it was, a 100% line-free replacement at a most worthwhile cost, however if it wasn’t for the digital speedo I wouldn’t have bothered.

Regards

2 main Issues with the highline upgrade ipk are :

The obvious one, lined display.

The less obvious : As the display declines in quality, it will become less easy to determine the display for rear fog lamp "On" This in-turn will become an MOT fail as the tester will be looking for "Telle tail" indicators on the drivers display unit. So the future for the worn out displays is bleak.

The way forward really is to have a good spare highline ipk, and a spare standard ipk put aside for the future assuming you intend to continue with the vehicle in years to come. Please remember that an ipk can be simply plugged in to work and check for lines etc, but they need to be coded to the vehicle they get fitted to in order to operate correctly and mileage to be transferred over from one to the other.

So knowing a T-4 operative is a handy thing !

You are ok plugging in an ipk to test as long as you dont drive the car.

Or transfer the existing EEPROM chip to the replacement IPK (I think that assumes it's for the same car variant.)
