Mine does 130 to 470mm and is just low enough to slide under the front. Higher is obviously better this is what I would recommend judging by its spec.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Ton-Heav...item27d21a9023

I would also suggest avoiding the axle stands where you open them up and fit a pin. The pin holes are widely separated, so they are quite restrictive in height settings. I found it necessary to drill extra holes between the existing ones to make them useful. Better seem to be the ratchet type.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I have one of these http://www.halfords.com/motoring/gar...4-trolley-jack but I got mine in a sale about 18 months ago for £39.99.
It can lift the car high enough to put it on the first stop of the axle stands, then you attach the high lift part and it will lift high enough to go to the axle stands max height.

For axle stands, a friend managed to get me 4 from the local sunday market for £10.

I've got a 'standard' home based trolley jack, and to give it the extra height to be able to use axle stands, I made a extra base out of 18mm chipboard (3 thicknesses off) with bits to stop it whizzing off - Saw that another member had done that on here but can't remember who.

Works a treat, but not in the wet

I bought one of these. It (the trolley jack) bent under the weight of my car, and got stuck. Wasn't happy.

I've now got an SGS Engineering one. Very impressed for the price.

Not only are most regular jacks incapable of lifting the car high enough in a safe way for axle stands, there appears to be little consensus as to exactly where to place the stands once the car is lifted, always use a solid flat piece of wood on top of the lifting cup to give good grip as well as to even out the force, and use a good quality semi pro jack at least a 2 ton one, 2,5 to 3 is better, remember our cars a heavy.

Default Trolley

I bought a Sealey 1153cx long chassis which is excellent, it lifts my tourer at the front high enough for axle stands, and being rated at 3 tons is not being stressed. It is low enough to just get under the rear suspension arms. They are about £46.00 on ebay, but if your patient I got mine for £40.00 delivered.
Paul.
