Speaking of which, I did the frame of my motorbike in a water-based clear over base and the depth in the finish is superb.

I bought some not realising as well. It was also rubbish, it was more a satin than gloss finish and showed all the brush lines. Binned it and bought good old fashioned oil based gloss.
Same with the stuff you put on fences, water based now only lasts a few months and doesn't contain preservatives anymore. Bought 8ltrs of good old fashioned Creosote today at a car boot even though now banned and illegal to sell but can't be beaten.

I have had another go this morning and have added some distilled water to it. It is better to apply for being thinned but still doesn't have anything like the body or finish of oil based. It will be oil based for me if I can get it in the future.
