Count me in too.

I was a member of the TSSC (Triumph Sports Six Club) for years and they had a "Self Help Scheme"

Essentially members put their details into a Register with name, location and contact number, and details of any special tools they own and could provide or help with, if they have space to help with repairs, what specialist skills they might have/offer etc etc

I recall it started as a "who could be contacted in the area, or is willing to help in the case of a breakdown" specifically, but could easily include a "willing to travel up to n miles" to help with a non-breakdown repair....

Spitfires, Heralds, Vitesses and GT6's were, in my view, a little bit simpler than Rover 75's mechanically .... a half inch spanner and a screwdriver was enough to fix most things on my 1963 Spit but I helped out a few members in my time and the Scheme was well subscribed to in the Club.

There was even a category "Can offer a bed for the night" It was as friendly a Club as this one!!

Apols for the long post. Hope the idea takes off.

Cheers

John

So here's my idea:

Every once in a while I read post from members having problems with their car that they are struggling to fix because of a health problem of some sort (often short term, often sudden).
If it happened to a member down the road form me I'd be happy to pop along and do the repair or fit the part.

So how about we set up a register of members who are 1, handy with the spanners and 2, willing, where possible, to help out someone who finds themselves stuck with a repair because of a health problem?

Just an idea.
And here I was thinking that is what the "Nano-meets" were all about....

Perhaps in addition to rather than instead of.

I've not been to a Nano and don't know what goes on at one so I'm not suggesting that this could replace it. I wouldn't know where my nearest one is either and I'm not one for travelling to meetings. But every time I read a post about a someone with a car they can't maintain because of a health issue my first instinct is to look at where they are so see if they are near enough for me to offer some help. So shoot me for suggesting something.

It's a possible idea and I am sure for some who are ill or have mobility issues it would be a boon, but does need some chewing over first.

In principle, a good idea. However, there are liability issues should something go wrong, and I know from bitter experience that you can have someone work on your car that might consider themselves 'experts', but are in fact bodgers, and end up doing more harm than good. I think a condition of letting anyone do a job on your car is that they have done the job previously on their own car, without any issues/problems thereafter.. Then there is the issue of spare parts quality to add into the equation.

Just a few idle thoughts on a dull Monday morning !

Many garage fitters who we pay a large premium to work on our motors are bodgers, that still dont stop folk from going to these places and handing over their hard earned cash.
