Could be the coolant pipe that runs under the front way down in the bay - not easy to spot and they can corrode badly.

Update .... having topped up last night garaged the car and just started. No lights at all no engine check light ran it for about 15 minutes and then same sequence. No sign of leaks. Water level seems stable. Need to use the car at the weekend but now confused. Maybe wait until Tuesday ..... thank you again for all your replies.

Forget the temp gauge, about as much use as a chocolate teapot, use this method to display correct coolant temp http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=185808

Des,
  1. Is your specialist travelling to you?
  2. Current overnight temperatures are close to freezing. You should not be putting plain water in your cooling system.
  3. Have you looked in the 'V' for signs of coolant leaking?
  4. Start the engine, press the windscreen demist button, get out of the car, walk to the radiator grille. Is the radiator fan running? This is a very important test.
  5. Read on the forum about clearing a blocked plenum drain.
  6. The 'check engine' light means that there's a problem with emissions.
  7. Did you buy the car from a dealer? If so you effectively have a 6 months warranty.

Sorry Des, I don't understand the question. What colour is the warning light and what does the graphic look like?

It's a red circle with 45 in the middle.
