KV6 Issues & Check Engine Warning Light

OK just bought a one owner low mileage 75 Tourer as above I wish I could be writing a wonderful rave review on my first Rover.

Well the warning lights in the centre of the dials are very interesting. They seem to have a mind of their own.

First time out everything fine but suddenly I get a red warning light with a max 5 MPH l8ght which then goes off and then the temperature gauge is all 9ver the place hitting red then normal. Red light starts flashing again with a 5 in the centre of a circle.

I reach my destination and check radiator and put in two kettles of water. Temperature stays stable and check for leaks even had RAC man out all clear. I checked ant freeze.

So red light starts flashing again and then stops. All seems to be normal now. No lights at all for next two trips or about 30 miles.

So I thought all is now well.

Just go out and start car to find yellow engine light. Check engine flashes up.

I am now snookered can't drive the car which I bought as a daily run around.

When I bought the car, the first thing was to book a specialist service which is Tuesday next week for a full check and service.

So from everyone's experience here is it terminal or is this a common problem e5c .?

Hello ... New owner. Have a 75 v6 2.5 Tourer. Following a red 5 with a red circle which went away ... then nothing ... now I have check engine light.

The car seems in great condition low mileage with service history.

I have booked a service when I bought the car, but that's not until 10th and need to use the 75.

Help please someone. ... is it something RAC could find?

The temperature gauge flinging itself about and subsequent refilling with water points to (hopefully) the thermostat leaking. Check the coolant again and have a search round the block for signs of water leaks. Not sure to be honest if that would trigger the check engine light though, a T4 session would pinpoint this.

You mentioned the car is going to a specialist - anyone we know?

Have you had to put any more water in it after the two kettle fulls ??

Thank you for the help. Will check water now but since filling up temperature has been stable at 9 o'clock. The Specialist is Russell from Sevenoaks MG Rover Solutions.

You don't need advice from anybody here then - he's a top bloke who fixes actual problems instead of diagnosing HGF by default.

Check the coolant level before and after any journeys from now on until you get it serviced - watch it like a hawk and obviously with the cold weather you should get some OAT in it too to prevent any freezing up.

Or better still, don't drive the car again until Russel gets there.

That's a relief - too many places think a KV6 will have the same 'problem' as the 1.8.

Thanks again everyone.... yes the water was down again needed two pints. Mystery as temp gauge is normal and NO leaks ... maybe filler cap .... thanks again everyone.
