I'm not on facebook, so haven't seen the full story. However, if he bought from a trader and the car hasn't been sold as spares/repair or sold as seen - neither of which are presumably the case when there's mention of a warranty period - then any faults which arise in the first six months after sale are deemed to have existed at the time of sale, and therefore are the responsibility of the trader.

Been there with trading standards. On a cheap car they were not interested in my cars faults.

I hope the garage in the op is going to have a change of heart

It's an old car with an uneviable reputation for unreliability, what do you expect people to say, there there, sue the garage as they're all crooks? If you buy an old car, no matter what the brand, you must budget for failures, as it's the nature of the beast.

The new Consumer Rights Act is pretty clear - 30 days to reject the car outright, then one opportunity to either repair or replace the car. If a repair is undertaken and it is not successful then you can have a refund.

Saying that, this is an 80 year old who at his stage in life doesn't need the stress of trying to deal with the garage who sold it to him. One suggestion is if he bought the car using a credit card then he can go after a refund that way.

So as he's had the car 5 weeks, he's over that period, so he's on his own. Old cars go wrong, no matter what make they are.

Sometimes you take a hit for the reputation you hope you have. I've spent £800 + on the Atlantic Blue 75 so far. I'm making nothing but I'll have the pride in knowing I sold it, I'll break even and save a rare car. If anyone is in it for the money with these cars they are shysters, they are too old to be making a profit on just now. If you sell one, then be honest at the very least or you won't last long.
I don't trade in cars and never have, this is the third car I've ever sold in thirty three years, it has to be right or it's not going. My point is this, if the law is there to protect people, it should be enforceable for all. A warranty is there as a legal minimum of protection and should be acted on.
