Default Kangaroo petrol?

Hi Everyone, when I accelerate quickly the car cuts in and out just like there's a kangaroo in the petrol (stop, start, lumpy as hell). it started when I approached 3000 rpm then ran normally when rev's reduced. I thought I may have water in the petrol as it seemed to run OK after a time but it keeps coming back when extra fuel is required like hard acceleration and doesn't run as smooth as normal especially when cold. Filter somewhere maybe that's partially blocked? My car is a 2003 Rover 75 1.8T Tourer. Any ideas please. Regards Ken
