Well, the Italians did award the car "World's Most Beautiful High Class Saloon." in 1999.
A tribute from a country that produces some beautiful cars, themselves. This is an extract from Wikipedia, so it must be right. Awards and accolades 1999 What Car? – 'Car of the Year'[114] What Car? – 'Compact Executive Car of the Year' What Car? – 'Diesel Car of the Year' Auto Express – 'World Car' Journal/AA – 'Business Car of the Year'[115] Italy - 'World's Most Beautiful High Class Saloon'[115] Bild am Sonntag – 'Golden Steering Wheel Award'[115] The Society of Plastic Engineers – Innovative Use Of Plastic[115] British International Motor Show – Best Riding And Handling FWD Saloon In The World Japan – 'Import Car of the Year' (1999–2000)[116] Middle East Wheels & Gears – 'Car of the Year' What went wrong?

On my visit to Italy last year I was surprised to see some Rover 75's there. In a week I saw several all in apparently regular use. Of course being Italy all wore some battle scars but good to see.
I don't know if the Estate was ever sold there but I did come back to mine on one occasion and a couple of locals were looking over it as if they had never seen one. Sadly I don't speak Italian and they didn't speak any English but they seemed to like it, another missed opportunity? |
