Default Parts Result.

One minor thing has been niggling me for some time with my '75. The chrome boot handle is not properly secured at each end. It looks fine, and does the job as it should, but the far ends refuse to sit tight against the boot lid. I finally got around to ordering a new pair of the little clips that secure, only to discover that the lugs on the handle had broken off.

Having taken the momentous decision to get it sorted, I decided to bite the bullet and get a brand new boot handle, but soon discovered they were no longer available . Anyhow, did a search on Xpart, which found one solitary dealer, with one single boot handle still in stock.

Gave them a quick call, and they confirmed it was still on their shelf and advised me it was listed at £110 plus VAT. I knew it was likely to be expensive, so wasn't surprised by the price, however, before I could say anything, the parts manager said as it was old stock, I could have it for £55 + VAT.

Very happy, and today Mr Postie dropped off a brand spanking new chrome boot handle, complete with badge. Looks lovely, too .

Be VERY careful when you fit the end ones. More push than turn, like you would with a normal spire-nut, with new clips and someone on the outside pressing the plinth hard against the boot. Got a 2nd hand but intact facelift 82cm one, and managed to snap a pin when replacing it

(Should have thin double sided tape on the top edge incidentally, in case you were unaware.)

Thanks for the tip, I'd be gutted if I broke it whilst fitting! Much appreciated.

I actually ran a die down mine and fitted small nuts with washers glued to them - eliminates any forcing of the spire nut thing onto the peg.

Ive repaired a couple by drilling s small hole where the plastic pin has snapped off, screw a self tapping screw into the hole, cut the screw head off and either use the old nut or a plastic wall plug as a nut.Works a treat

That's a really good tip, hadn't thought of trying anything like that.
