I have to agree with the article.

I’ve been looking for another decent 75 or ZT recently and there is a lot of rubbish on the market.

They have fallen to a price that puts them in the ‘banger’ category and more often than not, go through a new owner every time the MOT is due.

My first impression was that the article was a hatchet job, but after reading it more thoroughly it seemed quite fair. Prices are so low that lots of people simply buy them as cheap transport and spend the minimum on maintenance.

As many of us here are finding, dreadful quality replacement parts are making it financially impossible to keep these cars on the road more often than not. I've put 2 new clutch slave cylinders and a new master in the trophy blue ZT-T within the last 10,000 miles only to have it fail on me yet again this evening. This plus toffee drop links and numerous other rubbish parts is ruining the enthusiasm I used to have for these I'm afraid.

James Ruppert is a well established and highly regarded (by many) motoring journalist and as such I think this article of his in is spot on.

The absolute sheds I saw whilst looking for my 75 a few years ago... I'm glad that I spent a bit more on an example which has been looked after. I've had problems, sure, but nothing catastrophic. Most problems I've had have been electric, due to water ingress, I've had no real mechanical faults to mention, just general wear and tear.

A car can be incredibly reliable and go on for hundreds of thousands of miles, but if it's been neglected it's gonna have things break, regardless of what it is, and unfortunately lots of the cheaper 75's have just been thrashed.

Join the car selling groups on Facebook.

If it has a manual gearbox then you see them for sale requiring a new clutch and that's not exactly cheap but so many other cars aren't cheap to fix either.

Maybe it's the VED bracket that they sit in, that doesn't help.

But if you have the know how and the space you can pick up some real bargains which are highly specced and sell on repaired.
Although most do get broken.

He is indeed. I had one of his books for Christmas. Heard him being interviewed on the radio a few months ago. Knows his stuff.

I would agree that there are a lot of dogs out there for sale, since most of the good ones are already in safe hands (i.e. members of this great Club), but there are still bargains to be had. £1k can pick you up a decent car, but anything less is asking for trouble. Dealers seem to be upping their prices - many have examples between £1,500 and £2995, but private sales can prove good value.

That article is pretty accurate. He knows his stuff. Granted, we know there are good examples out there but they’re not obtainable with banger level money.
I think Robson is spot on too, used examples changing owners every time an MOT is due.
