BMW & JLR are in the hole for €hundreds millions come 2021 for missing their fleet emission standards, BMW much more so as they manufacture many more vehicles.

They're merging to reduce costs of developing electric drivetrains & PHEV vehicles.

Most if not all of the big car manufacturers will miss these 2021 emission targets (BMW are at the bottom of the list) & some of them are merging to reduce the costs of transitioning over to BEV's.

For example FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) have teamed up with Tesla to pool their fleets together to avoid paying emission requirement fines to the tune of £2billion for emission credits.

Within 10 years, maybe less, the car making landscape will be totally different. The big boys will have no choice but to merge or at least share technology to be able to survive in a rapidly changing market.
The days of stand alone car marques will be numbered. Only specialist makers like Morgan and super car makers will go it alone. Mass production means size matters and savings have to be made. Badges will be almost irrelevant. Look at the van market. Shared platforms with a badge on the front.

You can have any color, as long as it's black. And so the wheel turns.

I can understand working together on R&D for future ev power trains. But not one premium brand buying another premium brand selling the same product to the same customer base.
