What do people consider an "average mileage" now for our cars?
Was just reading another thread there and it made me sit back and think that for me I decide our cars into 4 categories now.
I know these car can handle them but where is most people's "cross over" line on millage now days. Let's for sake of argument engine type, size and gearbox don't matter and just a very general attitude of a 2001 car. Sub 85k - below average 85k to 140k - average 140k to 220k - big miles 220k plus - high miles Now as our oldest cars are now 16 years old (maybe 17 if prototypes) I'm real curious as to how people look at their own cars and others as we move forward into the future.

My 02 tourer had 196000 miles on it so I consider that high miles but after my quick fix it still ran fine but a repair on the passenger side sill had rotten from the inside out and I already had the Zt so the tourer became a source of parts for my own car.
My 03 Zt has almost 139000 miles on and I consider that about average got a few niggles to sort before going in for a retest but it's its first fail in 12 years so I consider that pretty good and it's only a few minor parts and a common problem of rusty brake line |

My diesel Tourer is heading towards the 200K mark, so is just nicely run in. Also got it's second wind after the 160 remap and goes like a good un..

My 03 saloon has 80k so still consider that low mileage.

I'm just in the below average category! Only by a couple thousand miles though.
I'd consider anything over 150k to be lots of miles, but probably has had the majority of parts already replaced. If mine gets that high in my owner ship, I'll have spent enough to try and get it to the 200k mark at least.

my 51 plate v6 is on 180K, but I don't think mileage is relevant, my car has been regularly serviced properly (by me) and is looked after mechanically, its not the prettiest as it is now and has been for 8 years my daily driver, but it still goes like it did with 20k on the clock and (touches wood.) never lets me down. I would take mine at 180K over an unloved and neglected 80K one any day.

I reckon I could clock 250000 miles off my car and nobody would be any the wiser.
Both mine and Mrs Noc's 75s are high milers: 365000 and 231000 respectively, but we also have a TD4 Freelander at a mere 141000 miles. |

For a 2001-or-older car, I'd view anything under 120k as being below average - even one that had done 10000 miles a year would still be breaking into your "big miles" category by now. Not that this would necessarily put me off buying one in decent nick, and indeed I'd be more likely to buy a manual one with 160k on the clock which had had a clutch within the last 40k, rather than one with 140k which hadn't.

I used to think 10k/year was average. Got my 2001 diesel at 105k and now it's 124k after just 12 mths. Obviously it matters, I'd consider 100k+ miles on a petrol car high miles, regardless of condition of engine. Just my opinion of course, I somehow feel petrol cars run 'dry', probably because a diesel uses 'heavy oil' as fuel
