Default Engine Malfunction Light

I have a Rover 75 tourer diesel and when you first switch ignition on the engine malfunction light (yellow) should come on for a few seconds and go off, this does not come on at all. I have had the car tested by a T4 machine and the ECU unit sent away to be tested, it has come back passed but the initial light does not come on when you first turn the ignition, lost now, any ideas what the problem could be.

Hi Sid, welcome to the forum. Do you have any running faults?

One idea, there is a way to do a gauge test which tests all the bulbs and needles for movement. I would try doing that and see if the lamp illuminates. I will try and find a link for you for performing the gauge test as I have never done it myself.

This thread details how to run the lamp test.

The results are something like this link.

this should prove if the lamp is ok or not as a start.

Sid

I would be cautious of throwing too much money at a problem like this unless its actually causing a problem with the driving or running of the car, as you could be spending a lot for no benefit.

If T4 did not pick up any issues then my money would be on a lamp failure in the IPK, Les is selling replacement IPK's with message centres http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=17705 (ie with the range and mpg readout) for £99, its an easy fit apparrently. You'd then need to see your T4 garage to get the new ipk coded. Any way I digress!

Let us know how you get on.

Well I was just looking up OP Sid's old posts to see if he had a diesel after answering his latest thread and came across this.

I've driven my car from new and the engine light has never come on as a check when I start up either. The only time I have ever seen it lit in 11 years is when doing the IPK selftest.
