Default Rear Sun Blind

My sun blind was working up to a couple of days ago, now when I press the button all I can hear is a click (once) from the rear parcel shelf when I press the console button.

Is it stuck, a motor problem or something else?

It's a common fault, I had this a couple of weeks ago until Messenger showed me what to do.

The motor gets stuck and just needs a bit of 'gentle' encouragement Fold the rear seats down, remove the D Post side trims by pulling them off, Pull off the side cushion bolsters, remove the black plastic trim thats up against the back wall of the rear seats (and take off the two rubber stoppers covering the rear seat brackets too).

If you have a Harmon Kardon subwoofer in the boot unscrew that, then unscrew the bolts holding the rear parcel shelf in place from the boot too.

Then you can lift the parcel shelf up enough to get a long screw driver in to tap firmly the rear blind motor to dislodge it.

The motor is roughly in the middle to left of the blind. After a couple of prods, try operating the switch (with ignition in position II) it should free up quite easily.

The thing is...........it'll happen again !
I've found once they start to stick, even when used on a regular basis just to keep the motor going, they always stick again after a while.
By tapping the motor casing, the field magnets inside can crack.
For the amount of work you've just described to access the motor, you're not far off being able to get the whole shelf out to do a proper repair.
I had to remove mine on my ZT for the very same reason & it's actually not that bad a job, you just have to be a bit careful removing/refitting the actual shelf.

What is the proper repair?

Good question !
I found on 3 seperate occasions in the past that the grease had gone really lumpy & hard around the gearing on the motor.
On these, I just removed the top cover, cleaned it out as best possible & re-greased.
Had no further problems however, I've alao had a few in that have been 'tapped' on the casing & these have actually cracked a field magnet to the point where a load of bits just fell out of the motor body !
In these cases, I found another good motor, re-greased & swapped them over.

I have the same problem with mine, had it out last weekend the motor is in good shape.
Came to the conclusion it could be old grease.

What type of grease did you put in to replace the old?

Andy

Hi Andy

I just used multi-purpose grease (Castrol LM)

I also tend to use this on my Powerfold Mirror gearing aswell as I found a similar thing happens there !

Thanks for replying, I think I have some of that kicking around.

I'm not fortunate enough to have any powerfolds at the moment but will keep it in mind if I ever get some.

I found the runners on mine were pitted. Gave them a clean and a liberal dose of wd (when down and again once it raised). Now runs nice and smooth every time.

Make sure the car engine is running when you operate the blind, the small amount of extra power the motor then receives makes all the difference in my case.
