Default Siemens /VDO 413x -**** or what?

Purchased my Zt yesterday and and after an hour of driving I decided to put on the radio. At first I thought it faulty as I could hear nothing. I turned up the volume to 14 (really?) and no matter how much I tried to tune it all I got was hissing. When I arrived home I tried a cd and it worked but the sound was as limp as Mr Humpries' wrist.

I presume there is a disconnect between the head unit and the aerial (located within the rear windscreen if I recall). With regards to the quality of the sound, is it the speakers or the unit that's rubbish? I like to keep things standard but will change the head unit if it's to blame.
If it is, how do I remove it?
