Question about diesel alternator...
Sorry 'bout this!
There is already masses about 2 -v- 3 pin alternators! However: Am I right in thinking that all early 2.0 CDT Rover 75's (2000 [W] in my case) had 3 pin alternators? Reason I ask is that my Rover is currently parked-up in the middle of W.Sussex with the charging light illuminated & a flat battery, whilst I am in London. So I can't check it easily! I ordered a 3 pin regulator thinking it'd be correct, (pretty sure it's the brushes gone on my car) & now have doubts after reading reams of diesel alternator stuff here! (Plan was to drive down to where the 75 is, fit the regulator, jump start it & drive it somewhere a little more accessible, then get a train to recover the other car!). I realise that two pin & three pin alternators are interchangeable, BUT AIUI, the regulators aren't. (So a 2 pin regulator won't fit a 3 pin alternator & vice-versa). Any thoughts appreciated!

Hi I would take a fully charged battery to fit to the 75. As the car will do a considerable mileage before flattening the battery, if done in daylight limiting power usage. Then Do repair where your able. Check your slip rings when changing regulator. Lee

I have what I beleive to be one of the later alternators in my stash ( VALEO ) and within the D shaped plug thingy are 2 spade connectors.
and checking here: https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/collections/...-and-yle102500 I just replaced the regulator pack ( 3 pin type ) on a 2001 diesel. ( I got a replacement ( 2 pin) alternator but never fitted it, just changed the regulator pack in situ - the brushes were shot ). I've never swapped analternator on a diesel but is allegedly a pig of a job. https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...d.php?t=230059 https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=243370 Last edited by hinged_bap; 10th January 2018 at 18:59.. |

I’m in the exact same boat at the moment. My battery light came on three weeks ago. I drove it back from my friends, 35 miles and just made it home without getting recovered. Just have everything switched off. Minimise use of using brake lights etc too. You’ll probably get around 40-50 miles out of it if very careful.

Thanks for the replies.
I reckon I'd need two batteries then, as the car is about 70 miles from home! I got someone to pull the plug... Looks like it has a two pin regulator, in that only two of the three connection 'holes' in the plug on the wiring harness are populated. (The plug has three holes, but only two connectors}. The regulator I bought has three pins... Ho hum.

I think all have three connection spaces with just two populated, regardless of how many connections are on the alternator. I think you need to check the alternator itself.

Getting down to Midhurst with a car full of batteries, then driving the poorly Rover back to London, swapping batteries as I go.... Gonna cost too much to get someone to transport it! (& the RAC have been no help. Should have reported it as a breakdown ). The mate who pulled the lead off the alternator said he can't see into the connector actually on the alternator as the power steering reservoir is in the way... Was there a cut-off date when Rover swapped from three pin to two pin alternators? Or did they use whatever came to hand?!

Take both 2 and 3 pin regulators and return the unused one. Changing regulator is a 15 min job all be it a bit awkward. 1 fully charged battery should get the car home if it's not a regulator issue like mine wasn't. Lee.
